How do you make money on X in 2026?
To make money on X in 2026, most creators combine X's own programs with their own offers. As of October 2026, X pays creators through Original Content Rewards and Creator Subscriptions, both with follower and impression thresholds. Anyone can also sell services, digital products or affiliate offers, as long as they follow X's rules.
If you've seen screenshots of creators sharing their X payouts, you've probably wondered if it could work for you. Here's the thing: the program behind most of those screenshots was retired in September 2026. The good news is that the ways to earn on X are clearer now than they've ever been.
X (formerly Twitter) gives you two kinds of income. The first is money X pays you directly. The second is money your audience pays you for something you sell.
What changed with X monetization in 2026?
The biggest change is that Creator Revenue Sharing has ended. According to X's Creator Revenue Sharing help page, new enrollments stopped on August 7, 2026, and the program was retired on September 7, 2026.
Its replacement is the Original Content Rewards program. Existing members could start applying from September 8, 2026, and they have to meet the new eligibility rules to join. If you want the full story of how the old system worked and what replaced it, I wrote a separate guide on how X revenue sharing works.
Option 1: Original Content Rewards
Original Content Rewards pays eligible creators based on "qualified impressions" on their original posts. X describes these as unique impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline, where at least half of the post is visible.
As of October 2026, the Original Content Rewards help page lists these main requirements:
- An active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription (or a qualifying plan on The X Subscription)
- At least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, not counting replies
- At least 500 verified followers
- Being 18 or older and based in a supported country
- Actively posting original content
Meeting these rules does not guarantee you get in. X reviews each application, and X says it can change or cancel the program at any time. Payouts run every two weeks with a $30 minimum. For the complete checklist, see my guide to X creator monetization requirements.
Option 2: Creator Subscriptions
Creator Subscriptions let your most loyal followers pay you a monthly fee for extra content and access. You pick the price from the price points X offers.
The bar is higher here. As of October 2026, X's Creator Subscriptions page asks for at least 2,000 verified followers and 5 million organic impressions in the last 3 months. X says creators can earn up to about 97% of gross subscription revenue, with deductions for app store and payment fees (an older X help page says this drops to 90% after $50,000 in lifetime earnings). My breakdown of Twitter subscriptions for creators covers the perks and payout timing.
Option 3: Sell your skills as a service
Selling a service is often the fastest way to make money on X, because you don't need a big audience. You need the right few people to trust you.
You show your skill in public posts and helpful replies, then people message you. Based on what I've seen, one good client can be worth more than months of platform payouts. I go deeper on this in how to get clients through Twitter.
Option 4: Sell digital products
Digital products like templates, guides, courses and checklists let you sell the same thing many times. They work well once people already find your posts useful.
The trick is to sell something your posts already prove you know. If your threads teach spreadsheet tricks, a template pack is a natural next step. My guide on how to sell digital products on X walks through pricing, launch posts and where to link.
Option 5: Affiliate links and paid partnerships
Affiliate links and brand deals can pay you a commission or fee for recommending products. On X, they count as paid partnerships and need a clear label.
X's Paid Partnerships Policy says posts with affiliate links, discount codes, gifted products or paid promotions must use the "Paid Partnership" disclosure in the post's content settings. Only recommend things you've actually used.
Option 6: Use X to win business leads
If you already run a business, X can pay off as a lead source rather than a payout. The money comes from customers who found you through your posts.
Founders and agencies often work this way. They post about the problems they solve, join conversations where buyers hang out, and invite people to a call or demo. My guide on generating leads from Twitter covers organic tactics first and X Ads second.
How do the options compare?
The options differ mostly in who sets the rules and how big your audience must be. Here's a quick side-by-side, using X's requirements as of October 2026.
| Option | Audience needed | Who controls the rules |
|---|---|---|
| Original Content Rewards | 500 verified followers, 500,000 impressions in 90 days | X |
| Creator Subscriptions | 2,000 verified followers, 5M impressions in 3 months | X |
| Services | No minimum | You |
| Digital products | No minimum, easier with trust | You |
| Affiliate and partnerships | No minimum, brands prefer reach | You and the brand, within X's policy |
| Business leads | No minimum | You |
Which way to make money on X should you start with?
Start with whatever doesn't need permission. For most people, that means a service or a small product, while you build toward X's program thresholds.
This is where it gets interesting. The habits that win clients (useful, original posts and thoughtful replies) are the same habits that grow the impressions X's programs reward. If your account is still small, my plan for monetizing a small Twitter account is a good next read.
It also helps to know your normal reach before you count on anything. I built a free extension, XVision, that rates each of your posts against your usual views, so you can see which topics actually land.
What should you avoid when monetizing X?
Avoid anything that fakes engagement or copies other people's work. X's rules for its payout programs are strict on both.
- Don't repeatedly ask people to like, repost or follow. X lists this as engagement solicitation.
- Don't reupload videos or posts from other creators. Copied content doesn't qualify for rewards.
- Don't use bots or tools that fake views, likes or follows.
- Don't build your whole account around "how to get paid on X." X says content focused only on monetization coaching is not eligible for rewards.
The honest path to earning on X in 2026
Making money on X in 2026 is very doable, but it rarely starts with a payout from X. It starts with posts that help a specific group of people. Payouts aren't guaranteed, and X can change its programs at any time, so treat them as a bonus. Build something you own alongside them, like a service, a product or an email list. You've got this, one useful post at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does X still pay creators in 2026?
Yes, X still pays creators in 2026, but through a different program. Creator Revenue Sharing was retired on September 7, 2026, and Original Content Rewards replaced it. X also runs Creator Subscriptions. Both programs have follower and impression requirements, and X reviews each application before approving it.
How many followers do you need to make money on X?
X's Original Content Rewards program needs at least 500 verified followers, and Creator Subscriptions needs at least 2,000, as of October 2026. Selling services, digital products or affiliate offers has no follower minimum at all. Many small accounts earn first from clients who found them through helpful posts and replies.
Do you need X Premium to make money on X?
Yes, X Premium is required for Original Content Rewards. As of October 2026, X asks for an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, or a qualifying plan on The X Subscription. Selling your own services or products through X does not require Premium, though X's own payout programs do.
How often does X pay creators?
X pays Original Content Rewards every two weeks, with a $30 minimum payout, as of October 2026. Creator Subscriptions work differently, with a $50 minimum and payment about 60 days after the end of the month. U.S. creators get paid through X Money, and creators outside the U.S. use Stripe.
Can you make a full-time income on X?
Some people do earn a full-time income connected to X, but usually from their own businesses rather than platform payouts alone. Services, products and client work give more control. X's payout programs can change at any time, so relying on them as the only income source carries real risk.
